Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) declared that the fatal incident in which a police tactical vehicle struck and killed Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi driver, during a riot constitutes a human rights violation.

"There is certainly a violation of human rights ... We will prove it," Komnas HAM commissioner Saurlin P. Siagian stated at the Police Professional Supervision and Development Division building in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He made the statement while representing the commission in a case review of the incident, which highlighted both ethical breaches and alleged criminal offenses.

Siagian emphasized that Komnas HAM trusts the Police Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) to further investigate possible criminal elements.

"We will continue to monitor the entire process, including the investigation conducted by Bareskrim," he said.

The commissioner added that Komnas HAM is currently inspecting the tactical vehicle, which belongs to the Greater Jakarta Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob), and reviewing all available footage to reconstruct the incident.

"We have obtained data from several CCTVs and we will analyze everything. I believe Bareskrim will take similar steps," Siagian noted.

On Thursday (August 28), a mass protest against the House of Representatives (DPR) near the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta spread to several areas, including Pejompongan, where the incident occurred at night.

A viral video showed a Brimob vehicle speeding through the crowd and running over Kurniawan. The tragedy escalated tensions, prompting protesters to surround and attack the Jakarta Brimob headquarters until the following day.

Seven Brimob officers confirmed to be inside the vehicle were quickly detained for questioning.

On Monday (September 1), police revealed that Chief Brigadier R, who drove the vehicle, and Commissioner K, who sat beside him, had committed major ethical violations related to the tragedy and may face prosecution and dishonorable discharge.

Meanwhile, the other five Brimob officers were found guilty of moderate ethical violations and now face possible disciplinary measures, including special placement, reassignment or demotion, delayed promotion, and postponed education.
