Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Environment Ministry (KLH) is conducting a performance assessment of 70 companies operating in the Brantas River Basin (DAS), East Java, including five that were previously monitored for alleged environmental pollution.

"Currently, 70 companies in the Brantas River Basin are undergoing an environmental management performance assessment through PROPER," Deputy for Pollution and Environmental Damage Control (PPKL) at the Environment Ministry/Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), Rasio Ridho Sani, told ANTARA in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The assessment is part of the Company Performance Rating Program in Environmental Management (PROPER), which aims to strengthen environmental protection and ensure corporate accountability.

PROPER, mandated under Law No. 32/2009 on Environmental Protection and Management, is one of the ministry’s key instruments to evaluate and enforce compliance.

Sani explained that the 2024–2025 PROPER assessment introduces several new focuses, including expanding participation to 5,476 companies, covering industrial estates and businesses located near priority watersheds.

"The results of this PROPER assessment will form the basis for further management of companies’ compliance performance, including potential legal action," he noted.

At the end of August 2025, the ministry carried out monitoring in the Brantas Watershed, where five companies were found with alleged violations that could pollute the environment.

These firms remain under close supervision and are required to make corrective measures, with possible sanctions if they fail to comply.
