“Professional journalism can serve as a home for clarifying information. Journalists work to purify information and restore integrity amid the chaos of digital content,”
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Nezar Patria emphasized the importance of professional journalism as a pillar for national unity and as a clarifier of information amid the overwhelming and chaotic flow of digital content.

“Professional journalism can serve as a home for clarifying information. Journalists work to purify information and restore integrity amid the chaos of digital content,” Nezar said in a statement confirmed on Tuesday.

According to Nezar, professional journalism differs from social media content primarily through disciplined verification applied to every piece before publication.

Verification ensures the quality of content, something often lacking among social media creators who are widely present in the digital space.

“When asked about the quality of information, the answer is accuracy. Number two is accuracy. Number three is also accuracy. This is what we must safeguard to keep journalism relevant and trusted by the public,” Nezar added.

Separately, Komaruddin Hidayat, chairman of the Press Council, highlighted the significant role professional journalists play in shaping the nation’s history.

He cited the example of Indonesia’s independence, where reporting -- from newspapers to radio -- served as a medium for diplomacy and proof that journalistic work is a pillar of civilization.

“Indonesia’s independence was recognized globally not only because of the proclamation, but also because of the diplomacy of words carried by journalists. The press is not merely a provider of information, but a pillar of civilization,” he said.

In the digital era, where chaotic information often misleads the public, Komaruddin reminded journalists, especially in Indonesia, of their responsibility.

He compared journalists to chefs providing food and beverages, stating that they must present accurate and high-quality information to benefit society.

“If the information is healthy, the public will grow strong. But if it is toxic, it can disrupt social and political order. This is the great responsibility of journalists: to safeguard social cohesion and national unity from Aceh to Papua,” Komaruddin said.
