Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf highlighted the plan after opening a budget management training for treasurers of schools under the free education program Sekolah Rakyat in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He explained that the ministry had conducted assessments to verify prospective beneficiaries and would launch the first batch of distribution within the next one or two days.
“The plan is to provide compensations worth Rp15 million (around US$913) to the family of each deceased victim, while the amount for the injured will depend on the severity of their injuries,” Yusuf told the press.
He added that the ministry had also prepared additional support, including programs intended to empower the families of victims who lost their lives.
The minister then highlighted that data compiled by his office shows that the nationwide unrest claimed seven lives and left six people severely injured.
Among the deceased were Affan Kurniawan, an online motorbike taxi driver fatally struck by a police vehicle in Jakarta, and four individuals killed in a fire that engulfed a local legislative council building in Makassar City, South Sulawesi.
“We are still consolidating data in collaboration with regional governments. In principle, the Social Affairs Ministry stands ready to carry out its duties and functions in providing social protection,” Yusuf stressed.
Earlier, the minister highlighted that President Prabowo affirmed that the government would to provide aid for both civilians and law enforcement officers affected by the riots.
“The president is giving special attention, not just in Jakarta but also in other regions like Makassar,” he said at the Presidential Palace Complex on Monday (September 1).
Forms of support could include school fees for family members, housing repairs or reconstruction, and other assistance tailored to each victim’s condition. Medical costs for the injured and compensation for families of the deceased will also be covered.
