“One of the important aspects of human rights is the recovery of victims, remedies. This includes both healing and the fulfillment of victims' needs through restitution, rehabilitation, and compensation,” Pigai said during a press conference held here on Thursday.
He expressed appreciation for the public, who, he said, have demonstrated a growing understanding of democratic dynamics. That way, he continued, the government's efforts to address the needs of protest victims can now focus on measures aligned with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
“We are pleased to see that the Indonesian people are mature and understand democratic dynamics. We have taken steps based on the ICCPR, which serves as a primary document for civil and political rights. Therefore, our handling framework in this democratic context is rooted in a rights-based approach,” Pigai affirmed.
Furthermore, he emphasized that all government actions related to the handling of unrest victims are carried out in accordance with human rights principles.
Several tactical measures have also been taken through collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs to identify and gather data on protest victims.
“The Social Ministry's programs are aimed at fulfilling recovery efforts. This is part of the state’s obligation to fulfill human rights needs, to meet the rights of all Indonesian citizens, without exception,” he explained.
Previously, Minister Pigai held a meeting with National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, to discuss the handling of unrests in accordance with human rights principles.
