Jakarta (ANTARA) - Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf confirmed that financial compensation has started to be disbursed to victims of the recent protests that erupted in various cities in Indonesia last week.

At the Presidential Palace on Thursday, Yusuf said that the compensation will be given directly to the next of kin of victims who have died, and will amount to Rp15 million (US$913). Meanwhile, every injured victim gets Rp5 million (US$304.5).

"We started the distribution yesterday, and today we will disburse it to victims in Makassar and Yogyakarta and in some other regions," the minister stated.

The compensation is obtained from the social assistance fund earmarked from the state budget via the Social Affairs Ministry, he noted.

He also disclosed that the newest data from the ministry recorded a total of 22 casualties from the unrest, including 7 fatalities, 9 residents with serious injuries, and 6 injured police officers.

"We will not discriminate between residents or police officers; they are all victims," Yusuf emphasized.

The minister also affirmed that the victims will receive not only financial compensation, but also social rehabilitation and access to empowerment programs.

On Wednesday (September 3), Yusuf personally delivered compensation and aid to the family of Affan Kurniawan, the online motorcycle taxi (ojek) driver who was killed after being run over by a police vehicle on Thursday (August 28), an incident that sparked a new wave of protests against the government.

The government provided Rp15 million in financial compensation and a basic food package for Kurniawan's family.

On the occasion, Yusuf also informed the late ojek driver's family about the ministry-sponsored business development program, in case they are interested in starting a business.

"We talked with Kurniawan's parents about what kind of business they want to start if they want to," he said, while adding that Kurniawan's family "showed an interest in participating in the development program".
