"Transmigration is not only focusing on relocating people but realizing prosperity for the people," he said during a working meeting with Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Jakarta on Thursday (September 4).
Besides public perception, several challenges also arise in transmigration, including uncertainty regarding the welfare of transmigrants after relocating to new areas, Suryanagara added.
He emphasized that the solution to future transmigration is not simply providing land, yards, and houses, but rather building a comprehensive ecosystem that supports a prosperous life for all transmigrants.
This ecosystem includes the provision of schools, places of worship, health centers, meeting halls, markets, and other supporting infrastructure to accommodate the needs of transmigrants, he remarked.
He said the government is also committed to ensuring job provision, regular income, and access to industrialization and downstreaming opportunities to support sustainable economic prosperity in transmigration areas.
The minister emphasized that the current transmigration development strategy is not about relocating a large number of people, but rather establishing new economic growth centers that encourage voluntary migration.
"The solution is not only to ensure these transmigrants have jobs, income, and a steady stream of revenue through industrialization and downstreaming, but also to ensure the ecosystem they build provides comfort," he pointed out.
With this approach, the government hopes transmigration areas can become new economic magnets, enabling development to proceed efficiently without excessively burdening the state budget.
Suryanagara stated that the 2025 transmigration program focuses on placing 94 percent of transmigrants locally, while new settlers only account for six percent.
According to him, transmigration placement must be based on an official request from the regional government, made through an inter-regional cooperation mechanism, in accordance with the transmigration law.
