Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The government is preparing housing assistance for victims of demonstrations in Makassar, South Sulawesi, according to the Director General of Regional Autonomy at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Akmal Malik.

The houses are being built in the Barombong area and are scheduled to be handed over next week by Minister of Home Affairs Muhammad Tito Karnavian and Minister of Public Housing and Settlement Areas Maruarar Sirait.

“This is our expression of concern for the families of the victims in Makassar,” Malik said during a visit to the city on Friday.

The government has prepared four to five habitable units in Barombong for the families of deceased victims, and one unit for a critically injured Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) officer.

The Ministry of Social Affairs is also involved in distributing various forms of assistance. Malik added that the housing support is focused on the families of the deceased, though additional help will likely be provided later.

Regarding the number of units, Malik said the regional government will map out detailed needs based on the victims’ circumstances.

“The mayor will determine the location. Preparations are now underway for the families of the deceased victims. God willing, Minister Karnavian and Minister Sirait will visit Makassar to directly hand over this assistance,” he said.

Makassar Mayor Munafri Arifuddin welcomed the central government’s concern, adding that his office will conduct thorough data collection to ensure the aid is distributed accurately.

“The Makassar City Government will make sure that the needs of the victims are properly addressed, so the central government’s assistance can be delivered effectively,” he remarked.

This initiative reflects the commitment of both central and regional governments to restore social conditions following last week’s riot in Makassar, during which the Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) building was set on fire.
