More than 500 participants, including journalists, historians, officials, and entrepreneurs, attended the 2025 Global South Media and Think Tank Forum in Kunming, joined by international and regional organizations.
“I call on media and think tanks to work together in amplifying the Global South’s voice,” said Fu Hua, president of China’s state-run news agency Xinhua, during the opening session.
Held under the theme “Empowering Global South, Navigating Global Changes,” the five-day forum brought together experts and leaders for high-level discussions on global challenges and South-South cooperation.
Participants are sharing insights and proposing practical steps to turn the forum’s theme into real-world projects and policy outcomes.

A major highlight of the event was the official launch of the Global South Joint Communication Partnership Network, involving more than 1,000 media outlets, think tanks, and institutions across 95 countries and regions.
The forum also released a key policy document, the Yunnan Consensus, committing to deeper collaboration in joint news production, research, and analysis across Global South institutions.
This marks the forum’s second edition hosted by China. The first took place in November last year in São Paulo, Brazil.
The Global South generally refers to countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Oceania.
These regions have seen significant economic progress over the past two decades, with growth continuing across key sectors.
According to the UN Conference on Trade and Development, global GDP is expected to increase by $55 trillion over the next five years, with 70 percent of that growth projected to come from the Global South.
