Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government declared full support for the participation of Indonesia Global Peace Convoy (IGPC) in the Global Sumud Flotilla and pledged protection to participating Indonesians.

Foreign Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela, in his video statement received on Sunday, said that the Indonesian government has been notified that 30 Indonesians will participate in the humanitarian flotilla.

As the mission will depart from Tunisia to the Gaza Strip on September 10, the government has coordinated with Indonesian embassies in the Mediterranean region for the protection of participating nationals.

“Through the Indonesian embassy in Tunis, the government has provided facilities during their transit in Tunisia and briefed them on possible risks that they may face while in Gaza,” Mulachela stated.

The ministry has also instructed Indonesian embassies in Cairo and Rome – whose jurisdiction includes Cyprus – to regularly monitor the flotilla and the safety of participating Indonesians, he said.

“The Indonesian government is consistent in supporting the struggle for independence of the Palestinian nation in accordance with international laws and regulations,” the ministry spokesperson remarked.

The Indonesian Embassy in Tunis had organised an audience and joint prayer with IGPC volunteers waiting for their departure to Gaza in Tunisia on Friday, September 5.

According to Ambassador Zuhairi Misrawi on his Instagram @zuhairimisrawi, on Sunday, Indonesia’s participation in the humanitarian mission reflected the nation’s “firm determination for Palestinian independence and the end of the Gaza blockade”.

He also commended the decision to name the five Indonesian boats in the Global Sumud Flotilla based on Indonesian independence fighters, namely Soekarno, Diponegoro, Hasanuddin, Pati Unus, and Malahayati.

The Global Sumud Flotilla aims to break through the Israeli blockade over the Gaza Strip and deliver humanitarian assistance to over 2 million Gazans.

The mission also gives a bold message to the global community that the people will not be silent in witnessing the ongoing blockade and genocide against the Palestinian people perpetrated by the Israeli Zionist regime.

Activists and figures from dozens of countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the United States, the Netherlands, Italy, Colombia, and Tunisia, participated in the Global Sumud Flotilla.
