Padang (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Ministry of Population and Family Development (Kemendukbangga) said Thursday that universities must play a key role in carrying out the nation’s long-term population development strategy.

Budi Setiyono, secretary-general of the ministry, told the 2025 National Population Symposium at Padang State University in West Sumatra that the “grand design” of population development will be implemented through a staged roadmap.

“Universities have an obligation to implement this roadmap alongside provincial, district and city governments,” Setiyono said.

The ministry or the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) is working with the ministries of Higher Education and Home Affairs to ensure universities contribute to the program.

“The consortium of universities is very important in assisting the grand design of population development,” Setiyono said.

He said collaboration with the two ministries marks a concrete step to respond to Indonesia’s demographic bonus.

“This is how we capitalize on the demographic bonus and achieve Golden Indonesia in 2045,” he said.

Padang State University Rector Krismadinata said campuses nationwide are prepared to support the roadmap in partnership with the government.

He said the university has already shown its commitment through community service projects targeting stunting prevention.

Each year, the university sends about 10,000 students into villages to address local challenges, including health and sanitation problems, he said.

“Our students aim to assist communities, including supporting the success of Kemendukbangga’s programs,” Krismadinata said.

Officials said the roadmap is intended to align national policy with local action in order to manage the population effectively.

They noted that education institutions are expected to provide research, innovation and manpower to strengthen the strategy.

The ministry said it views university participation as critical to making the plan sustainable.

It stressed that the roadmap is not only about numbers but also about improving the quality of Indonesia’s human capital.
