These 14 projects reduce approximately 4.8 million tons of CO2 equivalent,Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Environment Ministry (KLH) is facilitating the transition of 14 carbon emission reduction or carbon offset projects to the schemes and mechanisms stipulated in Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement.
Deputy for Climate Change Management and Carbon Economic Value Governance at the Environment Ministry/Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), Ary Sudijanto, stated in Jakarta on Friday that the transition must be carried out by emission reduction projects previously registered under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), a Kyoto Protocol scheme that expired in 2020.
"Until 2023, there were still ongoing projects. The UNFCCC then provided an opportunity for those projects to continue, but they must be transformed into the Paris Agreement scheme," he explained.
In Indonesia, there are 17 CDM projects under the Kyoto Protocol, 14 of which meet the requirements to transition to the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (PACM) stipulated in Article 6.4.
He confirmed that the 14 projects are committed to continuing, and KLH has assured them of full support. The ministry has three months to report these projects to the UNFCCC Secretariat.
"These 14 projects reduce approximately 4.8 million tons of CO2 equivalent," he said.
The transition will ensure that verified carbon reductions can be traded under the Paris Agreement scheme.
Some of the projects include geothermal energy, biogas processing from waste management, hydroelectric power plants (PLTA), and methane gas capture initiatives.
