“We’re working with multiple partners to rehabilitate coral reefs in the Pieh Island National Conservation Area,” said Firdaus Agung, director of Ecosystem Conservation at the ministry.
The project targets reefs vulnerable to rising sea temperatures and coral bleaching caused by climate change.
Firdaus said the initiative has already shown encouraging results, with improvements in water quality and significant ecological recovery.
In addition to restoring fish habitats and nursery grounds, the project also aims to expand healthy reef areas and develop the site into a diving destination for eco-tourism.
He noted the collaboration between the ministry’s Pekanbaru-based conservation unit (LKKPN), state utility PLN IP UBP Teluk Sirih, and the Minang Bahari Foundation supports Indonesia’s goal to protect 30 percent of its marine areas by 2045.
“This is a long-term investment in sustaining our marine ecosystems,” he said, adding that successful conservation requires cooperation among government, businesses, and local communities.

Rahmad Hidayat, head of LKKPN Pekanbaru, said regular monitoring shows a 97 percent survival rate of transplanted coral, proving the rehabilitation methods are effective.
Community involvement has been crucial, he added.
“We hope the success in Pieh Island can be replicated in other conservation areas. It’s not just about ecology, but also improving coastal livelihoods through sustainable tourism,” he said.
Lufti Nul Hakim, manager at PLN IP UBP Teluk Sirih, said the program aligns with the company’s environmental and social responsibility goals.
“Clean energy transition must go hand in hand with ecosystem protection,” he said.
Samsuardi, head of the Minang Bahari Foundation, said the program is also raising local awareness.
“We’re seeing a growing sense of ownership among coastal communities to protect the sea,” he said.
