Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Environment Ministry (KLH) has sealed a factory owned by PT Peter Metal Technology (PMT) in the Cikande industrial area of Serang, Banten Province, after it was allegedly identified as the source of radioactive Cesium-137 exposure.

Deputy Environment Minister Diaz Hendropriyono said in Jakarta on Monday that the ministry is fully committed to ensuring food quality in line with a sustainable environment.

“The task force for accelerated radiation management is a concrete implementation of the government’s commitment to protecting the public while maintaining ecosystem sustainability,” Diaz said.

KLH, together with the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapeten), and the police, has carried out a scientific investigation in accordance with international standards.

“We ensure that every step is carried out to the highest standards to guarantee safe food quality, maintain environmental integrity, and protect fishermen and consumers,” he added.

This action was part of the government’s swift response to allegations of radioactive contamination in frozen shrimp exports from PT Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods).

The Deputy for Environmental Law Enforcement at KLH, Rizal Irawan, clarified that shrimp raw materials from BMS Foods were safe.

Radioactive elements were detected only in the factory’s blowers and ventilators at low concentrations—below the safety threshold—and were immediately decontaminated.

Further investigation traced the radiation to PT PMT, where levels of 0.3–0.5 microsieverts per hour were found, higher than the normal 0.1 microsievert per hour.

Irawan stated that the government would not hesitate to impose administrative sanctions, including revoking the company’s environmental permit.

Civil and criminal legal action is also being prepared for any party found negligent or intentionally responsible for the pollution.
