Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Brian Yuliarto has urged aspiring architects to push innovation that supports national progress, saying architecture must adapt to global challenges while promoting sustainability and inclusivity.

“Architecture is not just about studying buildings, but about creating living spaces that are inclusive, sustainable and adaptive to global change,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

He delivered the remarks during the Equator Architecture Forum (EAF) 2025 at Tanjungpura University in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, on Tuesday.

Yuliarto said the forum, which brought together academics, researchers, practitioners and policymakers, aimed to encourage sustainable innovation in architecture and support Indonesia’s development goals.

He said the effort aligns with the country’s growth strategy, which emphasizes science, technology and creativity to drive the economy and national progress.

“Through collaboration between universities, professions and industry, we can make campuses centers of creative economic growth based on research and innovation,” he said.

Indonesian Architects Association Chairman Gunawan Cahyono said the profession must strengthen an ecosystem that combines local wisdom with modern technology and has a global outlook.

“Architecture is not only about aesthetics, but also about contributing to environmental sustainability and public welfare,” Cahyono said.

EAF 2025 is seen as an important platform for West Kalimantan, positioning the province as a living laboratory for tropical architecture.

The forum, attended by more than 400 participants, carried the theme “Excellent, Trusted, and Independent Architectural Education Synergy.”

With support from universities, professional associations and the government, the event is expected to generate new ideas and build collaborative networks to strengthen Indonesia’s role in global architecture.
