Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) confirmed that, as of 11:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), no fatalities had been reported following the 6.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Nabire, Central Papua, early Friday morning.

Head of BNPB Lieutenant General Suharyanto delivered the update during a press conference in Jakarta, noting that the overall damage was relatively limited.

Reported impacts include a collapsed bridge, two severely damaged houses, shattered glass at the Nabire District Office, and a damaged church ceiling.

Additionally, several windows at Nabire Airport were reported broken.

The earthquake occurred at 3:19 a.m. local time (UTC+9), with no tsunami potential.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter was located at coordinates 3.47°S, 135.49°E—approximately 29 kilometers northwest of Nabire City—at a depth of 24 kilometers.

BMKG recorded a series of aftershocks following the main quake, including: A 3.9-magnitude tremor shortly after the initial quake, another 3.9-magnitude aftershock at 1:36 a.m., a 3.4-magnitude tremor at 1:43 a.m., a 4.0-magnitude aftershock at 1:51 a.m, and a 2.6-magnitude tremor at 2:05 a.m.

BMKG has not yet released details regarding the cause of the earthquake. The agency urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information until a comprehensive analysis is completed.

Meanwhile, the Central Papua Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) continues to coordinate with the Nabire District BPBD to assess and respond to infrastructure damage.

“We are compiling data on damage to public facilities and residential homes and reporting it to regional leaders for further instruction. In principle, we are ready to provide support if needed,” Head of Central Papua BPBD Otis Money said.
