This information was revealed by State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi during a press conference at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Friday.
He stressed that President Prabowo is determined to establish the commission as part of efforts to strengthen Polri and enhance the quality of its services.
"It is true that under the President’s initiative, the government is committed to forming a police reform commission or committee. We are currently in the process of approaching several figures to join the planned body," Hadi said.
In this context, the minister confirmed that Mahfud is among the figures being considered due to his experience and expertise. "He is on the list of potential members," he added.
A seasoned bureaucrat, politician, and academic, Mahfud MD has held strategic positions across national executive, legislative, and judicial institutions. He assumed ministerial roles under former presidents Abdurrahman Wahid and Joko Widodo.
Also known as former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK), he served as a member of the House of Representatives (DPR) in the early 2000s. In the 2024 presidential election, he ran for vice presidency alongside Ganjar Pranowo.
On Tuesday (September 16), Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated that President Prabowo was drafting a presidential decree to establish the police reform commission.
According to Yusril, the commission would work for several months to produce recommendations on police reform, which would later be incorporated into a revision of Law No. 2 of 2002 on Polri.
The following day, the president appointed former Polri Deputy Chief Ahmad Dofiri to serve as Special Presidential Advisor for Public Security and Police Reform. These steps reflect the government’s response to public calls for an overhaul within the police institution.
