Serang (ANTARA) - Indonesian Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stressed that all managers of industrial, commercial, and tourism areas must manage their own waste to help meet Indonesia’s 2029 waste-management target.

He delivered the directive at the 2025 World Cleanup Day commemoration held in Serang District, Banten, on Saturday.

“The governor must require all owners of industrial, tourist, and commercial areas to manage their own waste, and not entrust it to regents or mayors,” Nurofiq said.

He explained that the policy is part of a national waste-management transformation, encouraging provincial governors to act fully as regulators.

Nurofiq specifically urged the Banten governor to issue stern warnings to area managers who fail to comply.

“We hope that, on the next occasion, the Governor of Banten will have the courage to warn all industrial estate owners to manage their own waste and not burden the district government,” he said.

This step, he added, supports broader institutional reform, separating the government’s role as regulator (rule maker and supervisor) from its role as operator (field implementer).

By requiring special-area managers to treat their own waste, district and city governments can focus on handling household waste from the wider community.

“This policy was adopted as a solution to address the national waste emergency and as part of efforts to meet the national waste-management target set for completion by 2029, as directed by the President,” he said.

Meanwhile, Banten Governor Andra Soni said he would strengthen coordination among regional heads, the Environmental Agency (DLH), and the central government.

“We will immediately follow up on the Environment Minister’s directive because this waste issue is one of our priorities,” he said.
