The initiative would build on Jakarta's existing UNESCO City of Literature status, granted in 2020.Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Provincial Government stated that Jakarta is currently in the process of obtaining status as a city of cinema, specifically in the stage of completing the required documentation.
“Together with the Indonesian National Committee for UNESCO, we are currently completing the documentation for Jakarta to become a city of cinema within the context of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN),” said the head of the Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Agency, Andhika Permata, in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Speaking at the "JEF Dialogue: Unlocking Jakarta's Potential through Tourism and Creative Economy," event on Tuesday, he explained that the initiative would build on Jakarta's existing UNESCO City of Literature status, granted in 2020.
"City of Cinema" is one of Jakarta's visions, which includes the aspiration to become a leading center for film production, the creative industry, and the creative economy at the national and international levels.
To realize the vision, the Jakarta Provincial Government is undertaking several efforts, one of which is facilitating domestic and international filmmakers to film in Jakarta.
"Jakarta will assist with various facilities for filming in Jakarta. We have a platform called 'Filming in Jakarta'," Permata said. adding that Jakarta is also striving to create a conducive ecosystem for the growth of the film industry as a whole.
The film industry in Jakarta continues to thrive, as evidenced by 2024 data showing 42,000 film titles submitted to the Film Censorship Board, he said.
"This means Indonesian films are flourishing. Furthermore, 285 titles passed the censorship process. What's interesting is that there are 141 production houses, 80 percent of which are based in Jakarta," he explained.
Furthermore, film productions can employ an average of 100-150 people, with production durations of up to six months.
