Taipei (ANTARA/PRNewswire)- TaiwanPlus and Japan's Fuji TV have partnered to produce a special Taiwan-focused episode of the Japanese documentary program "May I Stay Tonight?" now streaming worldwide on the TaiwanPlus website. Known for its heartfelt portraits of everyday encounters, the program follows protagonist Schlaf Ishida as he returns to Taiwan, the place where his journey first began, highlighting the island's culture of warmth, hospitality, and human connection.
Ishida, a 33-year-old Japanese backpacker, has spent the past five years traveling across Japan by standing on street corners with a handwritten sign that reads "May I Stay Tonight?" and accepting invitations from strangers to stay in their homes. Having already spent nights in more than 800 households, he first tried this idea in Taiwan as a student, where he stood on local street corners with the same sign in search of a place to sleep. His journey is now the focus of "May I Stay Tonight," a spin-off of Fuji TV's long-running documentary series "The Nonfiction", which has aired for more than 30 years. The program follows "Sleeping Bag Ishida" as he continues his travels, uncovering honest and moving stories about the lives of everyday people who welcome him in.
In this new Taiwan special, Ishida returns to Taipei and Tainan to retrace his steps. Along the way, he is welcomed by Taiwanese hosts from all walks of life: a university student, a young professional, and an elderly man who recalls vivid memories of Taiwan under Japanese colonial rule. The result is a moving portrait of Taiwan's openness and cultural richness, told through the eyes of both visitors and locals.
Yojiro Nishimura, Chief Producer of "The Nonfiction," noted in relation to this collaboration: "This documentary marks the first collaboration between Fuji TV and TaiwanPlus. We chose to feature the story of Mr. Ishida—also known as "Schlaf Ishida"—who has spent more than five years traveling across Japan with a simple sign that reads "May I stay tonight?", relying on the kindness of strangers to offer him a place to stay.
During filming, Mr. Ishida not only traveled through various regions of Japan but also visited Taiwan—the place that originally inspired his unconventional lifestyle.
Through his unique experience, the documentary offers an intimate glimpse into the everyday lives and values of people in both Japan and Taiwan. It also explores the deep cultural connection that many in Taiwan feel toward Japan, resulting in a film that is both distinctive and emotionally resonant. We are honored that The Nonfiction, Fuji TV's flagship program for over 30 years, will now reach international audiences through TaiwanPlus."
Eric Yang, Head of Program Department at TaiwanPlus, went on to say, "This collaboration shows how international co-productions can bring out the charm and spontaneity of stories that resonate across cultures. We are delighted to work with Fuji TV to bring this unique program to audiences in Japan, Taiwan, and around the world."
Michael Yu, CEO of TaiwanPlus, emphasized the broader benefits of such partnerships. "Collaborating with leading producers from other countries is a win-win. It introduces best practices to our teams while expanding our reach to new global audiences."
The project is part of TaiwanPlus' growing international co-production portfolio, which includes upcoming collaborations with Singapore's Mediacorp, Franco-German broadcaster ARTE, and Japan's Asahi TV. TaiwanPlus' own long-running original series "The Happy Fisherman" will also expand its horizons later this year, beginning a new season of filming in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
The Taiwan special of Fuji TV's "May I Stay Tonight?" is now available on the TaiwanPlus website and official TaiwanPlus YouTube channel.
