Padang (ANTARA) - Former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud Md stated that President Prabowo Subianto’s speech at the UN General Assembly affirmed and reflected Indonesia’s dignity on the international stage.

“I think the President’s speech was extraordinary. It also reflects our national pride and self-respect,” Mahfud said after delivering a public lecture at Andalas University in Padang on Friday.

Mahfud also expressed appreciation for President Prabowo’s firm stance on Palestinian independence.

The constitutional law expert emphasized that Indonesia’s support for Palestinian independence is a steadfast commitment.

“Support for Palestine is non-negotiable for Indonesia,” he stressed.

Mahfud explained that Indonesia’s support for Palestinian independence is rooted in historical solidarity.

He noted that this stance is based on the support Indonesia received from Arab countries during its own struggle for independence, including from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Palestine, and the Arab League.

On that basis, Mahfud encouraged the head of state to remain resolute in backing the Palestinian struggle for independence from Israeli occupation, including through support at the UN General Assembly, which is attended by leaders from around the world.

He added that the President’s statement—promising to recognize Israel if it first recognizes Palestinian independence—is a wise step toward ending the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

“Bung Karno once said that Indonesia would not establish diplomatic relations with Israel until Palestine becomes independent,” Mahfud recalled.
