"I have visited schools, from childcare centers for infants aged three months to three years, to kindergartens and elementary schools, to kick off the piloting of the 1 Day 2 Eggs program to meet children's nutritional needs," she said in the ministry's statement here on Monday.
The kick-off event was held in an elementary school in Rungau Village, Seruyan District, Central Kalimantan, and organized by the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation of Indonesia, on Sunday (September 28).
Tan said the initiative represents private sector support for the government's Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program.
According to her, the "1 Day 2 Eggs" adopts an important bottom-up approach, meaning that it stresses the importance of fulfilling proper nutrition early, even starting during pregnancy.
She explained that one egg contains around seven grams of protein and can meet a child’s daily nutritional needs.
"By consuming two eggs a day, a child’s protein needs can be met and complemented with other nutritious foods," she added.
Tan also underscored the importance of instilling healthy eating habits early, encouraging children to eat food without added salt or flavor enhancers.
"This is part of the healthy eating education," she said.
The program also involves teachers and educators in ensuring that each child receives adequate nutrition. It will continue to be piloted in other regions to assess its effectiveness and participation.
"At the kindergarten and primary school levels, we also see how children bring food from home, which indicates parental involvement in nutrition fulfillment," she said.
