Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of Indonesia's People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Lestari Moerdijat has urged stronger public awareness of disaster management to better address the impacts of climate change.

"Efforts to raise knowledge and improve people's ability to mitigate disasters must be carried out consistently to face the challenges posed by potential natural disasters," she said on Monday.

Moerdijat delivered her remarks at the 2025 Community Research and Innovation User Capacity Building event, organized by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

She stressed that disaster preparedness should also draw from local wisdom to support sustainable resource management.

According to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Indonesia recorded 2,310 natural disasters between January 1 and September 1. Central Java is among the most vulnerable regions due to its mountainous terrain, highlands, and widespread coastal lowlands.

"This condition requires readiness from the government, civil society, and communities," she said.

Moerdijat highlighted the importance of teaching communities the basics of disaster response, including risk mapping, mitigation planning, and both physical and non-physical preparedness measures.

She expressed support for BRIN's training initiatives, saying stakeholders at all levels must collaborate to strengthen public resilience against natural disasters.
