He emphasized that the 12-meter-tall statue would be moved to a more strategic location to show greater respect for the five-star general, who led Indonesia's independence war and served as the first commander of the nation’s armed forces.
"The statue of Sudirman deserves our utmost respect, considering his title as a great general. Therefore, the statue will be placed in a notable spot following the development of Dukuh Atas," Pramono stated here on Thursday.
Speaking at the Jakarta Town Hall, he reiterated that the relocation does not signify any attempt to remove or diminish the bronze memorial.
"In fact, our plan is to make the Sudirman statue more visible to those heading to Dukuh Atas from Thamrin, offering a more enjoyable view of it. We will make sure of this," the governor affirmed.
The Ministry of Transportation and the Jakarta provincial government are set to integrate the Karet and Sudirman Baru (BNI City) commuter line (KRL) stations as part of a transit-oriented development (TOD) concept in the Dukuh Atas area.
Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed that he had consulted with Governor Pramono regarding the integration plan, including the possible relocation of the General Sudirman statue, which was inaugurated in 2003.
"The other day, Mr. Governor raised the possibility of relocating the statue of Great General Sudirman, moving it closer to MH Thamrin Street," he said in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 30.
Elaborating on the TOD project, Purwagandhi explained that it aims to integrate the KRL, mass rapid transit (MRT), light rapid transit (LRT), and airport train systems to improve convenience and accessibility for the public.
"Our goal is to ease people’s mobility, facilitating their shift from one transport mode to another at Dukuh Atas, Sudirman, and BNI City stations," he explained.
