“Jakarta’s transportation is gaining international attention for its improvement,” he informed on Tuesday after meeting with the Mayor of New York, the United States, and transportation managers in the US city.
According to Pramono, Jakarta’s congestion level is lower compared to New York, which remains one of the most congested cities in the world, while Jakarta ranks 90th.
“It is possible due to several improvements that we made. Jakarta has the MRT, LRT, Transjakarta, Transjabodetabek, Commuter Line (KRL), and others, which are integrated,” he said.
He then expressed the hope that the existing transportation system in Jakarta would be adequate to ease congestion in the city.
Besides transportation, the governor also discussed plans to improve abandoned spaces in Jakarta, inspired by the High Line, a park built on an abandoned, elevated rail line in New York City.
He noted that such abandoned spaces are generally owned by the central and regional governments. If developed properly, they could serve the community.
“Including spaces for sports, skateboarding, and others. We will make improvements,” Pramono said.
He noted the High Line’s transformation into a green open space. “It inspired me to turn similar places into a green open space,” he added.
The governor said he will transform several abandoned places in Jakarta into green spaces and open public spaces.
He is also aiming to utilize the underpasses on Jakarta’s toll roads to develop community spaces.
If agreed upon, the provincial government will develop the projects in collaboration with the private sector, he informed.
“We can make many green spaces in Jakarta,” Pramono affirmed.
During his visit to New York, the governor also delivered a speech at the “High-Level Political Forum: Local and Regional Governments Forum” held at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters, where he shared the Jakarta government’s initiatives to mainstream the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into local policies and programs.
