Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono announced that Indonesia is actively seeking opportunities to export durians directly to China, bypassing intermediary countries such as Thailand and Malaysia to increase profit margins.

Sudaryono revealed that he had recently met with China’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture to discuss the potential for direct export arrangements. During the meeting, he emphasized Indonesia’s intention to accelerate shipments of durian straight to China.

“Until now, our durians have been exported to Thailand and then re-exported to China. We only earn about 10 percent profit that way. If we export directly to China, the margin could reach 30 percent,” Sudaryono told reporters here on Friday.

In addition to durian, Indonesia is also targeting the Chinese market for chicken and egg exports.

Sudaryono noted that the country has achieved self-sufficiency in both commodities, with production exceeding domestic demand.

“We’re self-sufficient in chicken and eggs, there’s even an oversupply. I’ve asked that we begin exporting to China and beyond,” he added.

Sudaryono stressed that Indonesia is ready to compete globally with fresh, high-quality products.

“We’re fresh from the oven. We can participate through proper and responsible means,” he said.

According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the country exported 600 tons of durian in 2024, valued at US$1.8 million or approximately Rp29.7 billion. The main export destinations were Thailand and Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, China’s customs data shows the country imported a record 15.6 billion kilograms of durian in 2024—an increase of 9.4 percent year-on-year—with a total value nearing US$7 billion.
