Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) has officially ended the search for victims of the collapsed Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo, East Java, after completing its final recovery efforts.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Basarnas Operations Director Commodore Yudhi Bramantyo said that 171 victims were found during nine days of search and rescue operations since the collapse on September 29.

Of the total, 104 people were rescued alive, while 67 were confirmed dead. Eight body parts were also recovered from the debris of the collapsed structure, he noted.

"We conducted the final search today at the cleared site. We expect no other victims left behind," Bramantyo stated.

He added that a body part found at 9:03 p.m. on Monday was the last retrieved and had been handed over to the police's Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team for examination.

"Yesterday, we cleared all areas and removed building debris. In the evening, we found one body part. Today, we are confident the site is safe," he said.

Following the conclusion of the operation, Basarnas formally ended the search, while post-disaster management will now be handled by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

"We officially called off the operation today. The next phase will be carried out by BNPB,” Bramantyo said.

The tragedy prompted President Prabowo Subianto to order a nationwide safety evaluation of Islamic boarding schools (pesantrens).

Responding to the instruction, Basnang Said, Director of Non-Formal Islamic Education and Pesantrens at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, said the ministry will review pesantren establishment permits with a focus on structural safety.

He added that the Minister of Religious Affairs has called for facility improvements and urged all parties to draw lessons from the incident.
