“This bridge is not only functional but also visually iconic. I believe it will become a new tourism attraction,” Yudhoyono said after inspecting the bridge on Thursday.
Pandansimo Bridge links Bantul and Kulon Progo Districts along the southern coastal route (JJLS), offering travelers stunning views of the Indian Ocean. At 2.3 kilometers long, it is the longest bridge in southern Yogyakarta and will be inaugurated soon.
“The bridge is located in a beautiful area right by the open sea. Travelers can enjoy the ocean view while crossing it,” he added.
Yudhoyono highlighted the bridge’s design as a reflection of Yogyakarta’s cultural heritage, featuring traditional elements such as a gunungan-shaped gateway, keris motifs, and batik nitik patterns.
The bridge also includes a rest area with a pendopo pavilion for panoramic sightseeing.
“There’s a unique cultural aesthetic here that sets it apart and draws visitors,” he said.
With a width of 24 meters, the bridge includes pedestrian lanes on both sides, allowing people to safely walk across and enjoy the coastal scenery away from vehicle traffic.
“I hope this pedestrian-friendly design will enhance the tourism experience and attract investors to develop this region into a new tourism hub,” he said.
The project was funded by the state budget with a total investment of IDR 863 billion (around USD 55 million) through the Ministry of Public Works.
Yudhoyono expressed gratitude to local officials, including the Governor of Yogyakarta and the head of Bantul District, for their support of this national strategic project.
“I hope this bridge connects the southern region better and serves the public for generations,” he said.
Meanwhile, Wahyu Hendratmoko, head of Yogyakarta’s Tourism Office, said earlier that the city is focusing on six key tourism assets to maintain visitor numbers amid budget cuts and the cancellation of major festivals.
“We’re making every effort to preserve Yogyakarta’s six main tourism strengths despite current budget efficiency measures,” he said on Wednesday.
These six core attractions—destinations, handicrafts, fashion, culinary experiences, events, and the tourism industry—are expected to anchor the city’s flagship travel packages.
