Jakarta (ANTARA) - Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana on Friday stressed the need to improve attractions, accessibility, and amenities to advance Indonesia’s growing halal tourism sector.

Speaking in Jakarta, Wardhana said Indonesia, home to about 230 million Muslims, has vast potential to lead in the Muslim-friendly tourism market by promoting unique, culturally rooted experiences.

She outlined government efforts to position Indonesia as a top destination for Muslim travelers, including enhancing infrastructure and streamlining services.

“Indonesia has many religious and historical sites that reflect our national identity. These can become major attractions if supported by better access, such as improved air connectivity, easier visa processes, and inclusive facilities,” Wardhana said.

The government plans to improve transportation access across 36 international airports to expand destination options for international visitors.

Indonesia currently offers visa-free entry to several countries and provides visas on arrival to travelers from more than 100 nations, easing international access.

Wardhana also noted the abundance of Muslim-friendly amenities, with more than 309,000 mosques and 376 prayer rooms located in airports, malls, and tourist destinations across the country.

To further support the sector, the government is encouraging halal certification for pilot projects and tourism villages in 15 provinces. These efforts aim to expand public access to halal products and services.

The ministry is also developing a dedicated website to help travelers explore and plan Muslim-friendly experiences in Indonesia.

In support of this initiative, the ministry is working with Bank Indonesia, the Enhaii Halal Tourism Center (EHTC), and Crescent Rating to launch the Indonesia Muslim Travel Index (IMTI).

The IMTI will provide key indicators to assess and improve services, helping Indonesia strengthen its position in the global halal tourism market.

“With the right strategy, we can become a leading destination for Muslim travelers,” Wardhana said.
