"The Ciliwung and Cisadane Rivers have quite big communities caring for them. We will soon forge collaboration with such communities, as I believe it is nearly impossible for us to address river-related issues without them—they deserve recognition," Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated.
The minister made the statement after participating in a cleanup activity along the Cipinang River in Jakarta on Friday and inaugurating a new environmental group dedicated to protecting the waterway.
Nurofiq extended the government’s appreciation for citizens who have formed similar communities to keep rivers free from waste, describing their initiative as a crucial contribution to environmental preservation efforts.
He expressed hope that these groups will help not only with cleanup efforts but also with raising public awareness about the importance of river protection for environmental sustainability.
The minister also underlined plans to work with state-owned enterprises to support environmental groups in addressing watershed issues.
"It is our hope that all communities will consistently play an active role in educating residents living along riverbanks, rallying them to join the efforts to prevent the littering of rivers," he said.
According to ministry data from water quality monitoring at 4,480 locations across 1,480 rivers during the first half of 2025, 70.70 percent of sites showed medium pollution levels, while only 29.3 percent met quality standards.
Moreover, all monitored locations in Jakarta, Riau Islands, and South Papua provinces were found to be polluted to varying degrees.
In this regard, the Ciliwung and Cisadane Rivers are among five priority watersheds, along with the Citarum River, Bengawan Solo River, and Brantas River, which have been experiencing worsening pollution levels.
