During a visit to the Sandubaya Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, on Saturday, Nurofiq said the city produces about 200 tons of waste daily, of which 40 tons are currently processed. Construction is underway to expand capacity to 120 tons.
"This still needs to be improved," he said.
The minister said the Sandubaya TPST is a well-functioning facility capable of processing 40 tons of waste per day. However, he reminded the local government to maintain the site’s performance in handling waste from households, businesses, and waste carried from other regions via rivers.
"I hope the city government can continue maintaining this facility to ensure effective waste management services," Nurofiq added.
He affirmed the central government's readiness to support efforts to address remaining waste problems and achieve full waste management coverage in Mataram through a phased approach.
Nurofiq also emphasized the importance of public awareness and participation in reducing waste generation through the 3R principle — reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Construction of the 5,300-square-meter Sandubaya TPST began in October 2023 with Rp19.9 billion (US$1.1 million) in central government funding.
The facility handles 46 tons of waste daily from the Sandubaya and Cakranegara sub-districts, comprising 18 tons of organic and 28 tons of plastic waste. After sorting and processing it into compost, maggot feed, and paving blocks, the TPST produces only six tons of residual waste per day.
