This plan was announced after a meeting with the Dog Meat Free Indonesia (DMFI) organization at the Jakarta City Hall on Monday.
"There was a request to create a governor's regulation banning the consumption of dog meat in Jakarta," he said.
The regulation, according to him, will be part of the government's anticipatory measures against the spread of rabies in Jakarta.
He further said that if the ban requires a regional regulation, he would propose it to the Jakarta Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD).
"Hopefully, this initiative is welcomed by the legislature," he said.
According to him, there are already two regulations related to the matter, namely Law Number 18 of 2012 on Food and Law Number 41 of 2014 on Agriculture and Animal Health.
"These two laws are the reference. Hopefully, Jakarta can set an example in this initiative," Wibowo said.
CEO of DMFI Karin Franken expressed appreciation for the step and commitment of the Jakarta Provincial Government in anticipating the dog meat trade in the province.
On the same occasion, a veterinarian from DMFI Marry Ferdinandes said that Jakarta can be an example for other regions in banning the dog meat trade.
"Banning the trade of this meat is crucial because it is related to the transmission of rabies in Indonesia," she said.
She also noted that the dog meat trade situation in Jakarta is critically concerning and needs to be handled immediately.
To this end, she expressed gratitude to the Jakarta governor for his intention to immediately issue a regulation to ban the dog meat trade.
