“The multi-enterprise forestry business model is being developed as a new backbone of the forestry industry by optimizing the full potential of forest areas,” said ministry official Laksmi Wijayanti in a statement issued in Jakarta on Wednesday.
According to Wijayanti, the strategy includes business diversification through the use of non-timber forest products, environmental services such as ecotourism and forest carbon trading, and agroforestry to strengthen food, energy, and water security.
The government is implementing this strategy by providing incentives for the transition toward a multi-enterprise forestry business model. These include applying carbon economic value, facilitating investment, and developing upstream-downstream infrastructure to support the 2030 FOLU Net Sink target.
Optimizing the multi-enterprise forestry business model is one of the three main pillars of Indonesia’s sustainable forest management policy. Other key focuses include optimizing forest landscapes and strengthening the role of Forest Management Units (FMUs).
Wijayanti explained that the forest landscape optimization strategy focuses on spatial consolidation and landscape reconfiguration.
“The steps taken include spatial consolidation to resolve overlapping areas and improve concession-based utilization while prioritizing community access,” she said.
Regarding landscape reconfiguration, Wijayanti noted that the strategy is carried out through integrated planning for landscape-based utilization, spatial structure development, and infrastructure network organization.
“In addition, we are mainstreaming ecosystem restoration, preservation and rehabilitation area management, as well as long-term forest management,” she said.
Wijayanti added that FMUs continue to strengthen their role as the frontline of forest management at the site level.
