"Indigenous peoples, forest farmers, and nature-protector communities who have been working selflessly can now receive compensation based on their work in maintaining ecosystems," Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, said in a statement received here on Sunday.
Nurofiq noted that this regulation marks a new phase in national environmental policy, where environmental conservation efforts are no longer seen merely as a sacrifice, but rather as valuable work that should be recognized, measured, and rewarded.
He made the remarks during a working visit to Central Java on Friday (April 18). Accompanied by Klaten District Head Hamenang Wajar Ismoyo, the minister engaged in dialogue with local farmers and the Pusur Institute at the Kehati Park in Klaten to explain the regulation's implementation.
The regulation is derived from Government Regulation No. 46 of 2017 on Environmental Economic Instruments.
It establishes a legal framework that transitions conservation efforts from voluntary activities to an incentive-based system.
Under this framework, local communities, forest farmers, indigenous peoples, and all those involved in environmental protection -- such as safeguarding water resources, carbon stocks, and biodiversity -- can receive compensation in a structured and legally accountable manner.
The system also opens opportunities for collaboration between the government, the private sector, and the society to build an economic ecosystem that is based on sustainability.
The minister stressed that the most important aspect of the regulation is not only the payment scheme, but the recognition that environmental preservation is a fundamental pillar of development.
Funding for the PJLH will come from the state budget (APBN), regional budgets (APBD), corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, and public donations.
