“Based on the pilot project in Merauke, fishermen’s incomes have increased by 100 percent as a result of this village program. We will now begin implementing it nationwide,” Prabowo said during his speech at the Plenary Cabinet Session at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday (October 20).
According to the president, the government has started building 100 fishermen villages and aims to reach 1,100 units by the end of 2026.
He explained that each fishermen village is equipped with key facilities, including cold storage for ice production, warehouses, and other infrastructure to maintain fish quality.
The government is also constructing 1,582 modern fishing boats with capacities starting from 30 gross tons (GT), he added.
All vessels are targeted for completion by the end of 2027 and are expected to strengthen the national fisheries sector, boost production, and increase the community’s protein supply.
“This will generate foreign exchange and improve the protein intake of our people,” Prabowo said.
The KNMP Program is part of the government’s long-term plan to develop 1,100 fishermen villages by 2029, with an additional 250 locations already receiving fund allocations in the provisional budget (DIPA) for the 2026 State Budget.
Prabowo emphasized that the program is not only focused on developing fishermen villages but also on supporting a quota-based, measured fishing system to promote equitable and sustainable fisheries governance.
The government will also provide supporting infrastructure such as docks, roads, drainage, and lighting.
Each fishermen village will include cold storage facilities, an ice plant, a fishermen’s workshop, logistics kiosks, and a fishermen’s fueling station (SPBN).
