“We are exploring steps toward establishing a PTA or a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement,” Prabowo stated during a joint press conference with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at Merdeka Palace on Wednesday.
He noted that trade between the two countries has grown significantly over the past five years. Amid global economic uncertainty, Prabowo underscored the importance of strengthening and expanding cooperation based on mutual benefit.
“South Africa is a key leader in the African region and will be a strategic partner for Indonesia in the years ahead,” he added.
Prabowo also emphasized the shared history of both nations in their struggles against colonialism and for independence.
“We admire the strength, idealism, and courage of the South African people in fighting injustice and apartheid,” he said.
Beyond trade, both countries discussed cooperation in defense, agriculture, energy, and people-to-people exchanges, particularly in science and education.
Meanwhile, President Ramaphosa said the two nations agreed to increase trade volume as a driver of inclusive economic growth.
“We emphasize the importance of building more resilient and diversified economies for the benefit of our peoples, especially as we face similar geopolitical challenges,” he stated.
During his state visit to Indonesia, Ramaphosa also attended a business forum bringing together Indonesian and South African entrepreneurs.
“The forum serves as a platform to identify concrete ways to strengthen economic cooperation through partnerships between business communities,” he said.
