Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria highlighted the strong interest of Indonesia’s younger generation in developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology, as reflected by the growing number of AI startups in the country.

“Many initiatives have emerged over the past five years. We now have around 2,800 startups developing AI technology,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

Patria explained that Indonesia has completed UNESCO’s AI Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM), which demonstrates the country’s preparedness to embrace AI development.

“We are the first country in Southeast Asia to complete the UNESCO AI RAM within four months,” he said, emphasizing Indonesia’s readiness to become a leader in AI development in the region.

The Indonesian government is currently drafting a Presidential Regulation to serve as the legal foundation for the adoption of the National AI Roadmap and the AI Ethics Presidential Regulation.

These two instruments will provide the framework for developing an ethical and responsible AI ecosystem.

“In line with our vision, one of the guiding principles is sustainability. AI must be developed with consideration for its impact on humans, the environment, and all living creatures, to ensure that it contributes to long-term well-being,” the deputy minister remarked.

He expressed optimism that with ongoing initiatives and collaboration among all stakeholders, Indonesia can emerge as one of the leading global powers in AI.

Earlier, Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid stated that Indonesia has tremendous potential in AI due to its high usage rates.

According to her, communities at the grassroots level have already adopted AI technologies, for example, to support fish farming.

The Indonesian government has identified five priority sectors for AI development, which are healthcare, digital talent education, bureaucratic reform, smart city development, and food security, to ensure that digital transformation promotes equity and public welfare.
