President Prabowo arrived at 8:20 a.m. local time, wearing a grey suit and a traditional black cap, according to a live broadcast from Bernama TV’s YouTube channel.
As the host of the 47th ASEAN Summit, Prime Minister Anwar greeted President Prabowo like an old friend. The two leaders embraced and shook hands warmly before engaging in an animated conversation.
Their friendly exchange continued as Anwar invited Prabowo to pose for photographs before the media, with both leaders seen laughing and conversing amicably.
President Prabowo then joined other ASEAN leaders inside the opening ceremony hall, including Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, as the country was set to be formally admitted as ASEAN’s 11th member.
According to available information, the 47th ASEAN Summit is also attended by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, European Council President António Costa, and leaders from ASEAN’s dialogue partners, including U.S. President Donald Trump, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The summit features 25 key meetings focusing on strengthening regional economic cooperation, advancing clean energy transitions, and developing the digital economy.
One of the central topics to be discussed is the potential use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes within the framework of an integrated ASEAN power grid.
This year’s summit also marks a historic milestone with the formal admission of Timor-Leste as a full ASEAN member.
Beyond internal regional matters, ASEAN leaders are also expected to address global issues, including the situation in Gaza and the bloc’s collective stance on peace efforts in the region.
The discussions are expected to produce strong regional consensus to help promote global stability.
