Penajam Paser Utara (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) is involving local residents in the development of the new capital in parts of Penajam Paser Utara and Kutai Kartanegara in East Kalimantan, aiming to build a skilled, competitive workforce alongside infrastructure.

“Development is not just about infrastructure but also about nurturing high-quality human resources,” Alimuddin, OIKN deputy for social, cultural, and community empowerment, said Sunday in Sepaku, Penajam Paser Utara.

OIKN plans to make local residents a central part of the capital’s growth, targeting at least 30 percent of employees in partner companies operating in the new capital to come from the surrounding communities.

The initiative is designed to provide direct benefits to locals while strengthening their role in managing and supporting the new capital’s development.

Training programs have already begun. Forty-seven students from Sepaku district are participating in basic security officer training, or Gada Pratama certification, preparing them to work as disciplined, competent security personnel in the new capital.

“These programs aim to turn local communities into a skilled workforce ready to compete and actively participate in Nusantara’s development,” Alimuddin said.

Certified local residents will gain qualifications that improve their employability and career prospects.

OIKN officials emphasized that education and certification not only build competencies but also empower residents to become active contributors rather than passive observers of the capital’s growth.

“Local communities must be prepared to be players in Nusantara, through continuous training and readiness,” Alimuddin added, highlighting the long-term commitment to human resource development as a key pillar of the new capital’s success.

By combining infrastructure projects with targeted workforce development, OIKN aims to ensure the benefits of Nusantara reach local residents, creating a more inclusive and sustainable model for Indonesia’s future capital.
