Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Islamic organization Muhammadiyah has voiced support for naming Indonesia’s second president, Soeharto, a national hero in recognition of his role in the nation’s independence struggle and long-term development.

In a statement received Wednesday, Muhammadiyah Central Executive Board Chairman Dadang Kahmad said Soeharto was a key historical figure who deserved acknowledgment for his dedication and contributions to the country’s progress.

“We support Soeharto’s nomination as a national hero because of his significant services to the Republic of Indonesia, from the independence revolution to the development era,” Kahmad said.

He noted that Soeharto fought in the guerrilla war and played an important role in the March 1, 1949 General Offensive, which helped secure international recognition of Indonesia’s sovereignty.

During his presidency, Kahmad said, Soeharto successfully implemented national development plans through the Five-Year Development Program (Repelita), which drove rapid economic growth and improved infrastructure.

Kahmad added that Soeharto’s leadership achievements included rice self-sufficiency in the 1980s, the success of the Family Planning (KB) program in curbing population growth, and political and security stability throughout his administration.

“When recognizing someone’s heroic service, we should not be swayed by political differences or personal interests,” he said. “We must appreciate their service to the nation despite their shortcomings.”

This year, the Ministry of Social Affairs submitted 40 names of national figures to the Council for Titles, Medals, and Honors (GTK) for consideration as national heroes.

Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf said most nominees were chosen after years of discussion and a rigorous selection process involving experts and community representatives at the national level.

Alongside Soeharto, other proposed figures include Indonesia’s fourth president Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), labor activist Marsinah, retired General M. Jusuf, former Jakarta governor Ali Sadikin, Islamic scholar KH Bisri Syansuri, cleric Syaikhona Kholil Bangkalan, and legal expert Prof. Mochtar Kusumaatmadja.
