Wamena (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged residents in eight districts of Highland Papua Province to be vigilant against extreme weather.

Acting Head of the Wamena Class III Meteorological Station of the BMKG, Laura SM Runggeari, said here on Thursday that based on current weather forecasts, the Highland Papua region and its surroundings have just entered the transition phase from the dry season to the rainy season.

Therefore, residents are advised to increase their vigilance.

"Currently, Jayawijaya District and seven other districts in Highland Papua are just entering the transition season from dry to rainy, and the peak, according to weather forecasts, will occur in January 2026," she said.

"We urge residents to remain vigilant to prevent loss of life," she added.

She noted that the Highland Papua region falls within the seasonal zone, which could last for the next two to three months.

"Highland Papua is in a seasonal zone, so based on weather observations, the peak rainy season will occur in December 2025 to January-February 2026, or three months from now, with moderate to heavy rainfall," she said.

She explained that in recent years the peak rainfall occurred in February and March, leading to natural disasters such as floods and landslides in Jayawijaya District occurred in April 2025.

"We have prepared a weather forecast analysis report for a one-year period from April to November 2025, and the Highland Papua region experiences many hydrometeorological disasters such as floods and landslides," she said.

She added that the hydrometeorological disasters in the region caused floods and landslides in Dal and Mebarok, Nduga District.

"The dominant factor causing this phenomenon is regional atmospheric waves. High air humidity produces a significant amount of water vapor, forming rain clouds and causing heavy rainfall," she noted.
