Jakarta (ANTARA) - Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid stated that her ministry has taken down over 2 million online gambling websites in the period of October 20-November 2, 2025.

"From October 20 to November 2, 2025, the number of websites and web contents (taken down) is 2,458,934, of which 2.1 million were websites and the remainder were file-sharing contents," Hafid stated in a press conference on Thursday.

According to Hafid, the ministry detected at least 123,000 file-sharing contents on various social media platforms during the period, including 106,000 on Meta platforms, 41,000 on Google and YouTube, and 18,600 on X (formerly Twitter).

The minister emphasized the need to optimize stakeholder collaboration to eradicate online gambling despite the Financial Transaction Report and Analysis Center (PPATK) recording a 57-percent decline in online gambling transactions this year compared with the 2024 numbers.

In the same period, the ministry also detected 23,604 bank accounts used for online gambling transactions, and the findings have been reported to PPATK, Hafid said, adding that the ministry will help block the bank accounts.

"We need to understand that apart from access, bank accounts also become a factor in internet crimes," she stated.

Meanwhile, Hafid stated that her ministry and PPATK have agreed to collaborate with international partners to eradicate online gambling as Indonesia considered it a cross-border crime.

"President Prabowo, at the APEC Summit, emphasized that online gambling is a cross-border organized crime. This means that our efforts to collaborate with domestic authorities and agencies are no longer sufficient," the minister added.

According to PPATK, online gambling transactions in 2025 amounted to Rp155 trillion, down 57 percent from Rp359 trillion in 2024. The decline in transactions also led to a fall in deposits, which dropped to Rp24.9 trillion this year from Rp51 trillion in 2024, a 45 percent decrease.

Hafid also revealed that around 80 percent of online gamblers earn less than Rp5 million (US$300) per month. Compared with 2024, the number of online gamblers in this lower-income group has declined by 67.92 percent.
