Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra announced that the Indonesian government is intensifying cross-border efforts to eradicate online gambling.

He emphasized that such activities constitute transnational organized crime and require coordinated international action.

“We will strengthen this cooperation. If necessary, we will hold dialogues and agreements with related countries to stop online gambling,” Yusril told ANTARA in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He stressed the need for both bilateral and multilateral collaboration, particularly among Southeast Asian nations, noting that online gambling operations often originate in one country and affect others across the region.

“Not only Indonesia but also the Philippines is very concerned about this issue, because the impact of online gambling in one country in Southeast Asia or elsewhere can affect other nations,” he said.

Speaking at a Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) event, Yusril distinguished online gambling from traditional forms, calling it a borderless digital threat enabled by rapid technological advances.

He also cited President Prabowo Subianto’s remarks at the APEC forum in South Korea, which underscored the economic harm caused by transnational online gambling and the need for global cooperation.

As Chairman of the Anti-Money Laundering (TPPU) Committee, Yusril reiterated that without strong domestic and international partnerships, efforts to prevent and eliminate online gambling would be ineffective.
