The Navy and Police are still conducting an investigation to find out what caused the explosion,Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Navy personnel evacuated victims of an explosion at State High School 72 (SMAN 72) in North Jakarta’s Kelapa Gading area to two hospitals and a community health center on Friday, as authorities continue investigating the cause of the blast.
Indonesian Navy spokesman Rear Adm. Tunggul said victims were initially taken to a local navy health post before being transferred to Cempaka Putih Islamic Hospital, Yarsi Hospital, and the Kelapa Gading community health center.
“Navy personnel provided first aid and evacuated the victims from the site to the Navy Housing Complex health post in Kelapa Gading before referring them to nearby hospitals,” Tunggul said in a statement in Jakarta.
He did not provide details on the number of victims treated or the total number of people affected by the explosion.
Tunggul said the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) and the National Police (Polri) remain at the scene to determine the cause and sequence of events leading to the blast.
“The Navy and Police are still conducting an investigation to find out what caused the explosion,” he said, adding that further updates will be released once verified data is available.
The explosion occurred Friday afternoon at SMAN 72, located inside the Navy housing complex in Kelapa Gading. Several people were reported injured, though officials have yet to confirm exact figures.
Images from the scene showed a bomb disposal vehicle stationed in front of the school as police and navy personnel continued their investigation.
“The public will be informed once the data and information have been fully verified,” Tunggul said.
Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri said 54 people suffered minor to moderate injuries, and some have already been discharged from hospitals.
“As of now, 54 people were injured, mostly lightly. Updates will be provided once further details are available,” he said at Cempaka Putih Islamic Hospital.
The police’s elite counterterrorism unit, Densus 88, is also examining whether the blast had any link to terrorism.
“Densus 88 is still assessing if there are any elements of terrorism involved,” police spokesman Adjunct Senior Commissioner Mayndra Eka Wardhana said.
Jakarta Police spokesman Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto said investigators are proceeding cautiously to prevent any secondary explosions.
“We are working with the bomb squad to thoroughly sweep the area and determine the source of the blast,” he said.
