Depok, W Java (ANTARA) - Vocational Education students from the University of Indonesia (UI) have launched the Village Care Tourism Movement to enhance community capacity in tourism management, digital promotion, and public health awareness.

One of the initiative’s main activities took place on Untung Jawa Island in the Seribu Islands, Jakarta, organized by students from the UI Tourism Business Management Program.

Head of the program, Anisatul Auliya, said in a statement on Sunday that the movement serves as a learning platform for students to understand their role as agents of change in tourism and community development.

Untung Jawa Island, which won third place in the 2021 Indonesian Tourism Village Awards, boasts rich marine, historical, and culinary tourism potential, with most residents engaged in tourism-related work and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

However, Auliya noted that further mentoring is still needed in tourism management, digital branding, and public health practices.

The students’ activities included seminars and workshops on professional tour guiding for local youth and community groups, as well as a beach clean-up at Sakura Beach to promote environmental awareness through direct action.

Health-focused programs were also conducted, including free medical and dental check-ups, and Gigi Berseri, an interactive dental hygiene initiative for children that provided toothbrush kits and milk.

The series concluded with DigiTour, a digital tourism workshop where local residents practiced creating promotional content for Untung Jawa’s beaches, culinary offerings, and tourist activities.

The programs were well received by the community, with 32 participants joining the health check-ups and nearly double the expected number attending Gigi Berseri.

Head of the island’s tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis), Adi Pepen, expressed gratitude for the students’ contribution to developing the island’s tourism potential and improving community awareness.
