Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Navy expects to take delivery of its new frigate, KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321, from Italy in March 2026, a senior naval officer announced on Wednesday.

Navy spokesperson Rear Adm. Tunggul said the Italian-built frigate, constructed by Fincantieri, will be the second of its class to arrive in Indonesia, following the delivery of KRI Brawijaya-320 in September 2025.

“The ship is scheduled to arrive in Indonesia in March 2026,” Tunggul said in Jakarta.

He added that the future crew of KRI Prabu Siliwangi recently completed specialized pre-deployment training—known as the Ship Retrieval Preparation Unit (KPPK)—at Fleet Command II in Surabaya, held from October 13 to November 7, 2025.

“The sailors underwent intensive training to strengthen teamwork, technical proficiency, and combat readiness in preparation for operating the vessel,” he said.

According to Tunggul, the 160-member crew is set to depart for Italy at the end of November 2025 to undergo further familiarization training at Fincantieri’s shipyard before sailing the frigate home.

“Once at the Fincantieri shipyard, the crew will conduct direct familiarization for approximately three months,” he said, noting that the training and delivery process is progressing smoothly to ensure the vessel’s timely arrival.

Tunggul confirmed that KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321 will be assigned to Fleet Command II, joining KRI Brawijaya-320 to bolster Indonesia’s naval defense capabilities.

“The addition of this new frigate will enhance the fleet’s operational readiness and contribute to national maritime security,” he said.

The two Fincantieri-built frigates are part of Indonesia’s broader naval modernization program, aimed at strengthening maritime defense and safeguarding the archipelago’s vast territorial waters.

Navy Chief of Staff Adm. Muhammad Ali stated that the Defense Ministry allocated US$1.25 billion for the procurement of the two frigates from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.

Ali noted that both frigates share nearly identical specifications, including a 127mm main gun, a 25mm close-in weapon system, anti-submarine torpedoes, and electronic missile systems.
