Indonesian Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said he met Brazil’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change Marina Silva on the sidelines of the COP30 climate conference in Belém on November 12 to outline joint priorities ahead of next year’s negotiations.
“We discussed steps we will take together at COP30 and agreed to follow up with concrete bilateral initiatives,” Hanif said.
A key focus of the meeting was Brazil’s newly launched Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF), a $125 billion fund designed to support forest-rich nations.
Hanif said Indonesia “fully supports” the initiative and is preparing financing mechanisms under President Prabowo Subianto’s instructions.
Indonesia, he added, has committed to participate actively in the TFFF and match Brazil’s contribution.
The ministers also discussed joint work on peatland restoration, an important component of reducing emissions from land degradation.
Indonesia is preparing a cooperation pact with the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Peru to advance tropical peatland rehabilitation.
Restoring degraded peatlands, Hanif said, is expected to generate high-quality carbon credits and strengthen efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions under global climate targets.
On November 8, Indonesia’s Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni reiterated the country’s commitment to protecting tropical forests through its participation in the TFFF.
He said the initiative reflects President Prabowo’s pledge for Indonesia to work multilaterally with countries committed to safeguarding the planet.
Raja Antoni added that Indonesia remains firmly aligned with the Paris Agreement and international norms on climate action.
He said President Prabowo had also announced that Indonesia is prepared to invest $1 billion in the TFFF - matching Brazil’s contribution.
“This is a bold step that places Indonesia alongside the world’s leading champions of tropical forest protection,” he said, adding that Indonesia’s role demonstrates that major developing countries can actively shape global mechanisms to safeguard critical ecosystems.
