BRIN Head Arif Satria announced the plan after reporting on the progress of research and the downstreaming of innovation to President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday.
"Currently, BRIN does not yet have a dedicated center for capture fisheries research. God willing, we will soon establish the Center for Capture Fisheries Research to support the target of increasing protein production," he remarked.
According to him, President Prabowo is paying special attention to meeting national protein needs, which encompass meat, chicken, eggs, beef, and fishery products.
The President stated that commodities like corn and rice have met national targets. However, the production of protein sources such as chicken, eggs, beef, and fishery products must continue to be increased.
Satria said that both marine and land aquaculture need to be continually accelerated to meet both domestic demand and export needs.
In addition to capture fisheries, he noted that President Prabowo also highlighted the role of research institutions in providing new hope with invention and innovation to address various national issues.
The BRIN head also reported that the acceleration of innovation downstreaming will continue through synergy with relevant ministries and several partners.
They include investment management agency Danantara, state-owned palm oil company Agrinas Palma, state-owned food company Agrinas Pangan, and state-owned fishery company Agrinas Jaladri.
He explained that the three Agrinas companies must be continually engaged as partners in the process of innovation and research downstreaming, noting that they need to acquire the latest technology to strengthen food production, in line with President Prabowo's directive on food self-sufficiency.
"Because for the President, food self-sufficiency is something that must truly be realized," he stressed.
