“The safeguarding (mechanism) is continuously being prepared. It will become part of the Climate Change Bill, and we are trying to regulate it from there,” Deputy for Climate Change Control and Carbon Economic Value Governance, Ary Sudijanto, speaking here on Wednesday.
Sudijanto explained that the mechanism, which will be incorporated into legislation, includes measures to maintain carbon integrity as well as sanctions for violations, including fraudulent actions that could affect Indonesia’s carbon value, especially in the voluntary carbon market.
“If it is at the law level, sanctions can be imposed. In government regulations (PP), sanctions cannot be regulated,” he added.
While awaiting the drafting and discussion of the Climate Change Bill, he assured that safeguarding carbon integrity is ongoing, including cooperation with international bodies such as the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM).
Indonesia and ICVCM signed a memorandum of understanding during the High-Level Breakfast Roundtable at the Sustainable Business COP30 (SBCOP) in São Paulo, Brazil, on Saturday (November 8), ahead of the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil.
“So the hope is that once the high-integrity standard is set, the safeguard will also be included. This is the initial step,” he said.
The Climate Change Bill has officially been included among 67 bills approved by the Legislative Body of the House of Representatives (DPR) for the 2026 Priority National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) discussions.
Previously, Sudijanto expressed confidence that Indonesia can overcome the impacts of climate change if all parties commit to implementing measures to address it, such as industrial decarbonization.
His remarks followed ongoing government efforts to establish safeguards for carbon integrity, accelerate the recognition of indigenous forests, and facilitate voluntary carbon trading as part of the country’s climate action strategy.
