Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Arif Satria has urged that plans to develop a spaceport in Biak, Papua, be designated as a National Strategic Project (PSN).

“We want to propose this as a National Strategic Project so the spaceport can truly be realized,” Satria said at the BRIN office on Thursday.

He explained that the project would deliver major benefits to Indonesia, particularly in satellite research.

With its own launch facility, Indonesia would no longer need to rely on other countries for satellite launches.

“BRIN is already capable of producing high-quality satellites, including the NEO-1 satellite currently being prepared for launch next year. Once NEO-1 is launched, more satellites will follow, and BRIN will be able to launch them independently once we have our own spaceport,” he noted.

Biak was chosen for its strategic location near the equator, which allows satellite launches to be more efficient. BRIN has completed feasibility studies and academic assessments of the project, and several domestic and foreign parties—including China and Russia—have expressed interest in investing.

“Hopefully, starting in 2026 we can prepare the regulatory aspects and other legal instruments so that technical development can begin,” Satria added.

Earlier, Indonesian Space Association (Ariksa) Chairman Adi Rahman Adiwoso highlighted the project’s economic potential, estimating annual revenues of up to US$200 million.

He cited a 2025 Deloitte study projecting ASEAN’s space-related GDP could grow by US$100 billion.

“According to their study, a spaceport could generate revenues of up to US$200 million per year,” Adiwoso said.
